With the ongoing pandemic ruffling the states of India, the country has so far reported 40 cases of the Delta Plus variant of the novel coronavirus.

Moreover, most of these cases are reported from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. In addition, in recent developments, the Goa government has currently increased surveillance along the border adjoining Maharashtra in the view of the neighbouring state reporting cases of the COVID-19 'Delta Plus' variant, which is considered highly infectious.

According to reports, on Wednesday, June 23, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant informed news agencies that cases of the 'Delta' variant of COVID-19 have been detected in Goa, but so far there is not a single case of the 'Delta Plus' variant in the coastal state. However, since the 'Delta Plus' variant has been found in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district adjoining Goa, "surveillance along the border has been stepped up", the CM said.

On the other hand, earlier on Monday, June 21, Maria Van Kerkhove, the technical lead of the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the current vaccines for the coronavirus are less powerful against the Delta coronavirus variant which was first detected in India.

However, the COVID-19 vaccines can still prevent severe disease and death. Meanwhile, according to reports, the WHO expert added that the "constellation of mutations" in coronavirus variants could lead to vaccines becoming ineffective.
