On Saturday, January 9, the government notified that the vaccination drive for the coronavirus will begin on January 16.

This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level meeting with senior officials to review the COVID-19 situation in the country in order to finalize the roll-out details. According to sources, health workers and frontline workers will be vaccinated first. Moreover, co-morbid people above 50 years of age and under 50 years of age will be vaccinated then, the number of which is approximately 27 crores.

After the abovementioned announcement, Prime Minister Modi tweeted: "On 16th January, India takes a landmark step forward in fighting COVID-19. Starting that day, India's nationwide vaccination drive begins. Priority will be given to our brave doctors, healthcare workers, frontline workers including safai karamcharis."



In addition, as a part of the vaccination drive, two vaccines- Covishield and Covaxin – will be given to people. Developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca, the Covishield vaccine is being produced by Pune-based Serum Institute of India. The second vaccine named Covaxin is developed, researched and manufactured by Bharat Biotech.

What documents are required for COVID-19 vaccine registration?

Aadhaar Card, Voter ID Card, Driving License, PAN Card, MGNREGA Job Card, Service Identity Card (with photo) issued by Central/State Government, Passport, Smart Card issued by RGI, with photo for vaccine registration health insurance smart card with pension document, passbook photo issued by post office/bank and plan of Ministry of Labor will be required. If you have any of these documents, you will be able to register for the vaccination process. Simultaneously a toll-free helpline number 1075 has also been issued.
