Even with Mumbai reporting the highest COVID-19 cases in a day at 20,971 on January 7, last week, the number of people who are presently in institutional quarantine has been the least since the commencement of the coronavirus pandemic, reports stated.

According to a report by the Times of India, when the COVID-19 wave first hit Mumbai in March 2020, in the initial few months, over 10,000 individuals were in institutional quarantine. On the other hand, in May 2020 the total numbers were at 10,260.

However, in the present situation, based on the account, a mere 542 individuals are in institutional quarantine facilities. During this time, the aggregate active cases in the city are near 1.03 lakh. Experts believe that there are many reasons for the same, one of these includes the fact that more cases are being reported from non-slum areas.

Apart from this, with many people not having a work-from-home option, they hesitate to move into an institutional quarantine facility since they fear the loss of job or pay, believe experts, stated reports.

The narrative quoted, Suresh Kakani, additional municipal commissioner who elaborated on how even though there are fewer institutional quarantine cases, the administration is not looking to curtail the facility. He believes that while presently 93 per cent of coronavirus cases are not from slums if the tables turn, the need for institutional quarantine may rise.
