Kerala Floods: Mumbai Doctors learned Malayalam to make their medical assistance more efficient

The team of doctors who went to Kerala to help the people affected by the tragic floods learned their local language in order to help the people better. They are supposed to be back in Mumbai on August 27

After a massive chaos in Kerala due to the floods, almost 325 people lost their lives and many are admitted to public hospitals suffering from diseases. Along with the relief material, on August 20, Maharashtra sent a team of 55 doctors from Mumbai’s JJ Hospital to provide 24x7 medical assistance in Kerala. 

However, the biggest challenge for the doctors here was to cope up with the language of commoners in Kerala and the medical experts took up this challenge by learning Malayalam to be more efficient with the patients.

Doctors have been assigned interpreters to understand the language and communicate with the local patients. However, the interpreters are not always around with the doctors. To resolve the issue of communication, the doctors initiated to learn the language by writing down important words. 



Mumbai doctors learned basic Malayalam which helped them to communicate with the locals. Doctors are supposed to arrive in Mumbai on August 27 after providing medical services to more than 20,000 patients.

Since last few days, we provided medical services in Mahalpur. Until the situation, we decided to stay in Kerala to provide medical aid. There is no age limit for one to learn, we learned Malayalam to communicate with the locals and this made our work easy,” Dr. Aakash Mane, JJ Hospital.
