Over 80 per cent of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 cases reported in Maharashtra since December 4 have been breakthrough infections which means it was reported amongst those fully vaccinated, reports stated.

According to state health authorities, the Omicron cohort continues to be too small to draw conclusions on the behaviour of the said variant. However, based on accounts, the authorities also remarked its immune escaping nature that must be seen as a point of caution.

Till December 19, from the 54 Omicron cases detected in the state, 44 have been amongst those fully vaccinated, narratives state. In the remaining 10 cases, two were unvaccinated but one had tested positive earlier. On the other hand, since eight were minors they were uneligible for the vaccines, stated accounts.

Based on narratives, the state has registered over 6.6 million COVID-19 cases. With the state’s full inoculation coverage touching 54 per cent, its first dose vaccination coverage is 86 per cent.

With accounts making assumptions that the Omicron variant causes only mild infections, doctors call for refined home isolation. Other than this, they are claimed to have also asked for an institutional isolation protocol in Maharashtra to ensure that patients don’t crowd hospitals unnecessarily.
