Maharashtra has recorded the most number of coronavirus cases. Every day, the number of people testing positive in the state is increasing. While the rise in the number of cases is a matter of concern, the rise in the number of positive cases is being attributed to the number of tests conducted by the government.

According to the data released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Maharashtra has conducted the most number of tests in the country. As per WHO and ICMR one of the ways to control this pandemic is by conducting as many tests as possible and through effectively isolating patients that have caught the virus. As per experts, South Korea has been able to effectively control the virus as it had been conducting extensive tests.

Coming back to Maharashtra, on Sunday alone, the state recorded 552 new cases of coronavirus, taking the tally of patients to over 4,200 by the end of the day. Currently, 87,254 Maharashtra citizens have been home-quarantined whereas 6,743 people have been directed institutional quarantine.

As of April 19, Sunday, Maharashtra had conducted 72,023 tests and 66,673 of the test reports came negative. In terms of the number of tests, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh follow Maharashtra. Delhi is ranked seventh in regard to the number of tests conducted whereas Kerala is seventh.

The Indian health authorities have been dealing with the coronavirus pandemic on the basis of the global three 'T's formula - Tracing, Testing and Treatment. Therefore, in order to control the spread of the pandemic, it is necessary to trace the people with the symptoms.

However, there have been instances of asymptomatic people being tested positive. Therefore, it is vital to conduct more tests to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Here is the list of states and the number of tests conducted by them:

  • Rajasthan  -  42,718
  • Gujarat  -  30,783
  • Tamil Nadu  -  29,178
  • Uttar Pradesh -  26,829
  • Kerala -  22,000
  • Delhi -  20,000
