The Maharashtra government had earlier decided to impose a night curfew in all the municipal areas, including Mumbai from December 22 to January 5 from 11 PM to 6 AM.

Rajesh Tope, the State Health Minister, responding to if the curfew will be extended or not, stated, “Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will take a decision regarding the Mumbai locals and the night curfew. We are monitoring the statistics of COVID-19 patients every day. We are also looking for new coronavirus patients. All kinds of information are being given to the Chief Minister in detail. He is closely monitoring the situation in Maharashtra. Therefore, only the Chief Minister will take a decision on this.”

Earlier on Wednesday, December 30, Union civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated that the Centre has extended the temporary suspension of flights to and from the United Kingdom till January 7, 2021, due to the new strain of the coronavirus. In addition to the flight from the United Kingdom, the government has extended the suspension on scheduled commercial international flights till January 31, 2021. The restrictions will not apply to international all-cargo operations and flights specifically approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

In view of the situation, the state government had also imposed the night curfew to curb the spread of the contagious disease. Besides, Mumbai police have been conducting a special drive to check the drink-and-drive violators as a part of the night curfew nakabandis. As per reports, as many as 35,000 cops hit the streets of the city on New Year's Eve in order to maintain law and order amidst the celebrations.
