On Thursday, January 7, Maharashtra recorded 3,729 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus. This propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 19,58,282. Currently, there are 51,111 active cases in the state. With 3,350 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 18,56,109.

More than 72 people from the state have lost their lives to this disease in the last 24 hours while the total has now mounted to 49,897. While 2,70,217 persons are under home quarantine, 2,824 others have been admitted to institutional quarantine centres. The COVID-19 recovery rate and fatality rate in the state stand at 94.78 per cent, and 2.55 per cent respectively.

Mumbai reported 665 new COVID-19 cases, 379 recoveries and seven deaths on Thursday, January 7, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 2,96,984. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, there are 7,756 active cases and 2,77,192 patients have completely recovered so far. The death toll is at 11,162 in the city. The recovery rate stands at 93 per cent. At present 24,46,999 tests have been conducted by the BMC. There are 211 contaminated zones in slums and chawls while 2,541 buildings are sealed by the BMC. 

Meanwhile, India reported 18,139 new cases, 20,539 recoveries and 234 deaths taking the tally up to 1,04,13,417 on Thursday, January 7. According to the data by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in total 1,00,37,398 have completely recovered. The death toll is at 1,50,570 in the country. At present, there are 2,25,449 active cases. According to the ICMR, 17,93,36,364 samples have been tested up to January 7.
