Post the Diwali-celebrations in Mumbai, cases of coronavirus have been on a rise again, however, in an unexpected instance, along with COVID-19, cases of malaria, gastroenteritis and leptospirosis have also witnessed a surge.

Leptospirosis happens to be a blood infection caused by the bacteria Leptospira. Signs and symptoms can range from none to mild (headaches, muscle pains, and fevers) to severe (bleeding in the lungs or meningitis). On the other hand, gastroenteritis is a form of stomach flu which typically spreads by contact with an infected person or through contaminated food or water. Malaria, on the other hand, is caused by a plasmodium parasite, transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes.

In the month of November, 249 cases of malaria, 127 cases of gastroenteritis and 23 cases of leptospirosis have been detected so far in Mumbai. However, no deaths have been reported as of now as the municipal health department is taking necessary measures to combat these diseases.

Back in November 2019, 299 cases of malaria, 32 cases of leptospirosis, 180 cases of dengue, 535 cases of gastroenteritis, 73 cases of hepatitis and 3 cases of H1N1 were detected. This year, 90 cases of malaria have been detected between November 2 and 8, 78 cases between November 9 and 19 and 81 cases between November 16 and 22. From November 2 to 22, 23 patients have been diagnosed with leptospirosis.

Moreover, since diseases like malaria, dengue and chikungunya are usually accompanied with high fever, doctors feel that people might suspect that they have contracted the coronavirus which can cause further panic in the minds of the citizens.
