The Lok Sabha on Thursday approved a bill that extends maternity leave for women from the current 12 weeeks to 26 weeks. India becomes the third country in the world after Canada and Norway to offer extended maternity leave benefits to women.
The bill, seeking complete paid maternity leave for women for 26 weeks had already been cleared by the Rajya Sabha. The bill that proposes to help a new mother cope with the nursing of the baby for six months had been forwarded to the labour ministry. After the ministry cleared it, the bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha.
