As COVID-19 cases across Mumbai continue to surge, BJP MLA Ameet Satam has asked for the city’s popular Juhu Beach to remain closed on weekends.
Satam wrote a letter to the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal saying that the beach should be shut for visitors from Friday to Sunday evening owing to the coronavirus situation in Mumbai.
This comes after the Union Health Ministry said in a recent report that Maharashtra is in the midst of its second wave of infections.

“Maharashtra is at the beginning of the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. There is very limited active effort to track, test, isolate cases and quarantine contacts,” the report said.
The report went on to highlight the lackadaisical attitude of the district administration while pointing out that large crowds were witnessed in public places during weekends with no social distancing norms followed.

State Authorities have recently announced restrictions until March 31 to contain the spread of the virus. Though these rules are not as severe as the lockdown last year, hotels, multiplexes, cinemas, restaurants etc, are now allowed to run at only 50 per cent capacity.
As for the closing of Juhu Beach, officials said that they will wait for instructions from senior authorities on shutting off the region during the weekends. They also said that no religious or political gatherings are currently allowed in the vicinity.
