On Monday, December 21, there was a dip in the daily cases in Maharashtra as 2,834 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus were recorded. This propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 18,99,352. Currently, there are 59,469 active cases in the state. With 6,053 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day which is the highest number from past few days, the number of recovered soared to 17,89,958.

55 people lost their lives to coronavirus on Dec 21. So far, a total of 48,801 people in the state have died owing to the contagious disease. While 5,04,938 persons are under home quarantine, 3,579 others have been admitted to institutional quarantine centres. The COVID-19 recovery rate and fatality rate in the state stand at 94.24 per cent, and 2.57 per cent respectively.

Meanwhile, in the wake of a new strain of COVID-19 spreading rapidly in the UK, on Monday, December 21 Maharashtra government announced a night curfew in municipal corporation areas from December 22 to January 5 as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of contagious disease.

As per the state government directives, the curfew will remain in effect between 11 pm to 6 am till January 5 in the financial capital. BMC also issued a set of guidelines for the passengers arriving in Mumbai from Europe and Middle East countries. Under this, passengers arriving from these countries will have to spend 7-10 days in an institutional quarantine after arriving in Mumbai. Furthermore, there is a flight ban from all flight originating from and to Mumbai starting Dec 22 11:59 pm.

Mumbai reported 463 new COVID-19 cases, 693 recoveries and 12 deaths on Monday, December 21, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 2,87,313. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, there are 7,754 active cases and 26,77,03 patients have completely recovered so far. The death toll is at 11,008 in the city. The recovery rate stands at 93 per cent. At present 22,02,536 tests have been conducted by the BMC. There are 263 contaminated zones in slums and chawls while 3,109 buildings are sealed by the BMC.
