A mother is selfless and can move mountains for her children, if needed. One such mother donated a part of her liver to save her baby who was born with a medical condition called 'Biliary Atresia'.
Also, nine-month old Kavya Raut became the youngest baby to undergo a liver transplant surgery at Mumbai Central’s Wockhardt Hospital.
Kavya hails from Gholvad village in Palghar district.
On June 14, 2018, the surgery was carried out by a team of doctors, led by Dr Anurag Shrimal, Consultant Abdominal Organ Transplantation, an HPB surgeon.
What is Biliary Atresia?
In this condition, the patient’s bile ducts that carry bile from the liver to the intestine, are narrow, blocked, or absent. He underwent a major surgery (Portoenterostomy) at a hospital in Mumbai when he was merely two-months old.
However, the surgery failed, and he ended up with liver cirrhosis. Result of which he stopped growing, and his weight was tagnant at 5-6 kg. The baby developed jaundice, fluid in her belly along with a couple of life-threatening infections.
Dr Anurag Shrimal said that liver transplant was very challenging. He added that the team of doctors removed the diseased liver and harvested a small portion of the mother’s liver, that weighed 260 grams. They further reduced the harvested liver using special techniques to 210 grams and implanted it in Kavya’s body by joining tiny blood vessels (3-5 mm in diameter). Post this, the liver started functioning immediately.
After the 14-hour long surgery, Kavya is now ready to take on the world and soon will be discharged.
