As the coronavirus pandemic plagues the city, the BMC is in a major rush to create more quarantine centres and isolation wards for the patients suffering from COVID-19. In such an initiative by the municipal body, the BMC has converted a school in Mulund to a hospital.

The Mithaghar municipal school in Mulund East has now been converted into a full-fledged hospital with proper equipment, medicines, facilities, ICU beds, ventilators and dialysis machines. This school has been transformed into a hospital for asymptomatic patients. As the patients kept increasing with every passing day, the hospital has now been ramped up with newer facilities with only the exception of an operation theatre. Currently, there are eight ICU beds with air conditioners, oxygen cylinders, four dialysis machines and two ventilators.

The BMC has used community support to mobilize the resources. It has borrowed ventilators and dialysis machines from private hospitals to treat the patients. Over the past month, more than 300 patients have been admitted to the hospital, out of which 80 have recovered. The BMC has been further planning to increase the capacity of the hospital as more patients from Mulund, Bhandup and Vikhroli have gotten themselves admitted to the school turned hospital.

This instance showcases a great array of support between the elected representatives, BMC and the police. There have also been extreme forms of community support that has proved to be vital. The healthcare costs for the COVID-19 patients are paid by the BMC. However, the patients have to support their own dialysis. The patients are also provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner by the catering services. Each classroom which measures about 450 sq. ft. hosts up to six or seven patients. So far, only one patient has died in the hospital. The BMC also plans on installing oxygen tanks in the school to further provide intensive care for the patients struggling to fight the coronavirus.
