Mumbai: 2,471 people received mental health treatment at HBT clinics

A total of 211 patients have been admitted to municipal hospitals for further treatment, while 1,400 patients have been counselled and followed up

Psychiatry services are being provided from April 2023 in 'Hindu Hruday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Aapla Dawakhana' on behalf of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to examine, counsel, treat and follow up patients related to mental health among the citizens. 2,471 people received mental health treatment in 'Aapla Dawakhana'.


Mental illness affects people's thinking, behaviour and emotional control. Due to lack of proper harmony of thoughts and feelings, mental balance is disturbed. Since mental patients are a subject of ridicule in the society, through the Public Health Department of the BMC from April 7, 2023, 190 hospitals and 135 HBT clinics provided psychiatric services in their hospitals. 462 medical officers of this hospital have been trained in mental health. Two thousand 471 new suspected mental patients have been reported since April. Among them, 347 were reported mild and 41 severe cases were found. A total of 211 patients have been admitted to municipal hospitals for further treatment, while 1,400 patients have been counselled and followed up.


The incidence of mental illness is increasing day by day in the world. According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, the prevalence of mental illness is 14 percent compared to other diseases. One in every 8 people in the world suffers from mental illness. Keeping this matter in mind, treatment of mental illnesses is also being given priority on behalf of the Municipal Corporation. Patient services related to mental health are being provided in suburban hospitals and medical colleges of the Municipal Corporation. Also, approximately 400 patients are being treated in Bhardawadi de-addiction centre and approximately 800 patients are being treated in Rajawadi hospital per month, said Executive Health Officer of Public Health Department, Dr. Daksha Shah said.

Mental health symptoms

Depression, test anxiety, stress at work, alcohol or drug use during stress, loneliness in old age, persistent suicidal thoughts are symptoms of unstable mental health.

As soon as any patient develops such symptoms, he or his relatives should seek medical advice and treatment. While treating mental illnesses, meditation, yoga and exercise, staying away from addictions, a cheerful and happy mind, good relationship and harmony, starting treatment as soon as symptoms are found are important.
