Over the last few months, Mumbai has been observing a lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak. This has caused a lot of distress for people across the city, especially for patients with heart ailments and the ones who need immediate care. Amidst this, Masina Heart institute, a heart hospital in Mumbai, made necessary plans and arrangements for its patients, to ensure safety and precautions were taken as per protocols given by experts.

While travelling across the city was difficult, patients were also not able to seek help as many hospitals and healthcare centres were being converted to COVID-19 centres. Furthermore, since coronavirus was a risk for patients with co-morbidities, many were also worried about the safety of being admitted at a hospital, especially in tough times.

In a conversation with Mumbai Live, the spokesperson of the institute said that the team had arranged a dedicated six-bed cardiac ICU triage to accept all emergency cardiac patients, irrespective of their COVID status. Besides this, another 12 bedded cardiac ICU was also organised for non-COVID patients, as a need for the same was noted. The aim of taking this decision was to provide primary treatment on time and help cardiac patients when in need.

Adding more to the same, the spokesperson said, patients with chest pain or MI were taken without COVID test for primary treatment in triage ICCU and then shifted to main cardiac ICU once COVID status was determined. After providing primary treatment the patients were kept in isolation in triage till the COVID report was released.

If reports were negative then the patients were shifted to the main ICU and were posted for coronary angiography and were given required treatment. However, if the reports were positive for COVID-19, then they were shifted to other the dedicated ICU or at COVID wards at Masina Hospital.

As directed by the government, healthcare providers continued their service towards patients with non-COVID ailments, even during the outbreak, however, the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFw) were followed thoroughly to ensure safety.

As of June 29, the growth rate of coronavirus cases in Mumbai has reduced. The city currently has 1,10,846 cases, out of which only 20 per cent cases are active. More than 5 lakh tests have been conducted in the city, and officials are taking necessary steps to ensure the situation improves in Mumbai.
