Mumbai Police Registers 256 Cases Against Citizens for Violating COVID Guidelines

Mumbai Police has filed a total of 256 cases against citizens found to be violating the coronavirus guidelines on Saturday, April 17, bringing the tally of registered cases since March 20, 2020, to 28,851. 

Around 602 people were booked in the 256 cases filed over the weekend. Violating citizens were booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant).

However, 400 of these citizens were later released on bail while 195 have been issued a notice and seven are yet to be caught.

Data provided by Mumbai Police further said that 71 out of the 256 cases registered over the weekend were against people not wearing a face mask and/or gathering in public on Saturday, which was designated a weekend lockdown amidst the surge in cases.

Meanwhile, 43 cases were filed against people related to COVID-19 patients that were skipping mandatory quarantine, and 11 cases were registered against hotels and related establishments. Separately, cases were filed against 59 shops and a few local pan shops for violating guidelines.

Police data further highlights that most of the violations occurred in the western region of Mumbai covering Bandra-Jogeshwari.
