Mumbai is grappling with an increase of 15-20% in conjunctivitis cases. Apart from that. Delhi and other regions are also witnessing a rise in conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye.

The reason behind the majority of these cases is viral conjunctivitis. It is caused by the adenovirus. Children, in particular, appear to be more susceptible to contracting the infection. Doctors have noted that approximately 40% of those affected are children.

In some areas, conjunctivitis cases have reached epidemic levels. Compared to previous seasons, there is a 10-15% increase this season. Doctors in Mumbai have acknowledged the clear surge in cases. However, they have not explicitly used the term "epidemic."

While most of these cases are viral and self-resolving, there is a potential for complications if the virus affects the cornea. Adenoviral conjunctivitis, responsible for the rise in cases, typically presents with many symptoms. Those symptoms are fever, cold, runny nose, exhaustion, redness, swelling, itching, or watery eyes.

Although mild cases involving corneal injuries are rare, healthcare professionals are advising caution. Doctors have linked the increase in conjunctivitis during the monsoon to excessive humidity. While most cases of conjunctivitis resolve within 2 to 3 days without severe complications, it should be noted that some individuals may require longer medication treatment than usual.
