The coronavirus crisis has left quite a few people without food or proper shelter. Keeping this in mind, several NGOs and institutions across the country have established canteens or food distribution camps.

Mumbai University has now set up a community kitchen where it will provide meals two times a day to the needy as well as unemployed daily wage earners near the Kalina campus in Santacruz.

The institution will reportedly distribute two meals a day to 500 labourers. The university in its statement said that migrant workers are currently held up in Maharashtra. The institution is supported by NGO Chingari Shakti Foundation which helped with the procurement of oil, spices, food packets and some other miscellaneous materials. The Deputy Collector was also involved with collecting food grains for this charitable cause.

State Governments across the country have provided some form of free ration or meals to the underprivileged. However, there are still thousands of people who miss out. Individual crowd-supported or NGO programs such as this can have a big impact on the migrant labourers who are currently struggling for one meal each day.

Purchasing groceries is not an option for many of them with no salaries coming in. These are the workers who depend entirely on the wages they earn every day. Each day the lockdown continues, it further hinders their ability to buy essential goods. Citizens can donate to charities like Mumbai Roti Bank while food-delivery service Zomato has partnered with Feeding India to provide meals to the underprivileged.
