No Community Transmission Of Omicron In Mumbai So Far, Says BMC Additional Commissioner

On Wednesday, December 15, BMC Additional Commissioner Suresh Kakani while releasing the results of the sixth genomic surveillance stated that there isn’t any community transmission of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Mumbai so far, reports state.

Based on narratives, Kakani elucidated that they found Omicron cases owing to contact tracing of the international travellers. Therefore, he concludes that at the moment there isn’t any community transmission.

According to accounts, the sixth survey highlighted that the descendants of the Delta strain, Delta derivatives that resulted in the second wave of coronavirus in India, continue to be the dominant strain.

During the sixth survey, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s gene testing lab at Kasturba Hospital sequenced 297 samples. In the state health department’s Tuesday’s update, it mentioned that seven of the samples which is 2 per cent showed Omicron positive. This has been done according to the Union health ministry’s protocol.

From the leftover 290 cases, 62 per cent which is 183 highlighted Delta derivatives. 105 which were 35 per cent were Delta variants. This is the second survey that highlighted Omicron cases. According to Kakani, this was the first time that samples from private labs were also included.

Apart from this, on Wednesday, four new cases of Omicron were detected in Maharashtra from which one was from Mumbai.
