Mumbai has been severely affected by COVID-19 leading to multiple lockdowns and a general sense of worry among the populace. However, data available via the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) suggests that the number of symptomatic COVID-19 patients that require hospitalization is decreasing as compared to June 24.

The data further reveals that out of the 1,000 to 1,200 people testing positive for the virus, only around 150 to 180 people are found to be showing symptoms of the virus. As of June 24, the BMC had reported 11,641 symptomatic patients and 963 critically ill patients from a total of 30,063 active cases. However, as of July 21, symptomatic patients came down to 5,252 out of a total of 23,865 active cases. Though a total 1,286 of these cases are deemed to be in critical condition.

Although there is a clear increase in the number of critical patients as compared to the figures from June, it’s clear that there is a decline in the number of symptomatic cases, thus reducing the potential load on private and civic hospitals in the city.

Adding to this, a senior civic official said - “The number of symptomatic patients is falling now. Even if we increase the number of tests and positive patients increase, the number of hospitalisations may not increase because of this.”

Hospital bed availability in Mumbai (as of July 23):

  • Number of beds reserved for COVID-19 patients - 22,157
  • Number of beds currently occupied -  12,002

It’s worth noting that out of these figures, over 90 per cent of the ventilator beds and ICUs are currently occupied whereas 40 per cent of the standard and oxygen beds have been released.
