According to sources, in Mumbai, 23 per cent of the hospital beds are vacant as the demand for hospital beds have witnessed a spike significantly with the instances of COVID-19 cases increasing.

Although Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has promised to increase the capacity of hospital beds to 21,000, only 12,500 beds have been made available so far. Due to insufficient manpower in the hospitals, the load is increasing adding to the difficulties in increasing the capacity of the beds.

In Mumbai, the number of COVID-19 cases has gone up to 15 per cent. The demand for beds in private hospitals has once again increased significantly as the cases of coronavirus happen to be more prevalent among the upper and middle-class residents.

On the other hand, earlier on March 26, the BMC had asked private hospitals to allot more beds for COVID-19 patients just as it was done in July last year. Even though the number of symptomatic patients who need hospitalisation has not increased more than 20 per cent, the surge in overall cases is so high that there happens to be a possibility of a bed crunch.

Meanwhile, as per sources, about 100-150 patients suffering from COVID-19 are admitted every day to hospitals across the city. The BMC has given the hospitals KB Bhabha Hospital (Bandra), SK Patil Hospital (Malad) in Mumbai, Dr Ambedkar Hospital (Kandivali Shatabdi), Bhagwati Hospital, K.B. Treatment for Corona patients will be resumed at Bhabha (Kurla), Maa Hospital (Chembur), Madan Malviya Hospital (Govandi), Rajawadi Hospital (Ghatkopar) and MT Agarwal (Mulund) instructions to admit patients by providing beds within two days.
