According to sources, the prevalence of the COVID-19 Delta Plus variant has increased in 24 districts across the state of Maharashtra.

The highest number of patients are currently being found in the districts of Ratnagiri and Jalgaon.  Earlier on Monday, August 23, 27 fresh Delta Plus patients were found. As a result, the number of patients in the state has gone up to 103. Genome sequencing tests have now shown that it is prevalent in a total of 24 districts. Moreover, about 50 per cent of the cases are in Vidarbha and Konkan divisions.

Meanwhile, it has been more than a month since Delta Plus was discovered. As per experts, it takes about 14 days for a virus to spread in an area.

District wise patient statistics:

Jalgaon (13), Ratnagiri (15), Mumbai (11), Kolhapur (7), Thane, Pune, Amravati, Gadchiroli six each, Nagpur (5), Ahmednagar (4), Palghar, Raigad, Amravati three each, Nanded, Gondia, Sindhudurg, Nashik two each, Chandrapur, Akola, Sangli, Nandurbar, Aurangabad, Beed, Bhandara one each.

Earlier on June 22, the Union ministry of health and family welfare, in a statement, called the variant “a variant of concern”. Furthermore, the ministry cited an analysis by a consortium of genomic sequencing labs that purportedly found the mutated virus to spread more readily. Addressing a press conference earlier that day, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan had called Delta Plus a “variant of interest” (VoI), implying that it is being studied.
