Since the past four days in Maharashtra, nearly 338 resident doctors from various hospitals have tested positive for COVID-19, reports stated. The said information was shared by the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) President, Dr Avinash Dahiphale.

News agency ANI quoted Dahiphale saying, "A total of 338 resident doctors from various hospitals have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last four days".

Previously, reports had stated that at the state-run JJ Hospital over 100 COVID-19 infections were reported in the past week. At Byculla's JJ Hospital, 73 resident doctors, 21 faculty members that entailed the dean and staffers tested positive.

On Wednesday, January 5, the MARD remarked that all civic-run medical colleges in Mumbai are seeing a rapid surge in numbers. Data collected by them highlights that 73 resident doctors were infected at JJ, 45 in BYL Nair, 60 at KEM, 80 at Sion Hospital and seven in RN Cooper.

A significant number of healthcare workers across India have been infected with coronavirus in the backdrop of the highly transmissible variant, Omicron. This new variant was allegedly first discovered in South Africa in 2021.

Amid the rise in COVID-19 cases reported in Mumbai, state health minister Rajesh Tope remarked that while lockdown was not on the cards, strict restrictions are likely to be imposed soon
