In a substantial development, Mumbai has witnessed the percentage of critical patients suffering from the coronavirus decline over the past few months, however, the number of people on life support has reportedly increased.

As per experts, the rise in need of oxygen usage can be attributed to availability and in some cases delayed hospitalisation. According to reports, the percentage of patients put on oxygen support has increased over the last year. Of 26,897 active cases last June, 14.5 per cent were on oxygen support, which rose to 18 per cent by September and to 19 per cent by December. This month, of 12,487 active cases one-fifth are on oxygen support which is 21 per cent (2,668) patients, across Mumbai.

On the other hand, on Saturday, March 13, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held an online review meeting with representatives of hotel and restaurant associations, shopping centre groups, warning them of a shutdown. Stating that a "lackadaisical" attitude towards norms with regards to social distancing had crept in lately, he added that crowds had increased in most places since activities resumed in a phased manner from October, and safety rules were not being followed which has led to a spike in cases of coronavirus in recent times.

Meanwhile, on January 16, Thackeray had launched the COVID-19 vaccination drive in the state and inaugurated the vaccination centre at BKC. While initially this drive was being conducted on five days every week- Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, now it has been extended to all days 24x7.
