A particularly designated infectious illness hospital, modelled after Mumbai's Kasturba Hospital for Infectious Diseases, is scheduled to open for Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC). The hospital will be built in the Kalamboli region of Navi Mumbai. It is anticipated to be constructed inside the community facility built by CIDCO.

Following the devastating effects of the COVID-19 epidemic in the area, which claimed thousands of lives, the civic body was planning to build the hospital.

To handle the issue, PMC had to strengthen its health services. Subsequently, the management determined that a specialised hospital was required to handle these kinds of cases. Apart from COVID-19, several other cases of TB, swine flu, and other contagious diseases were being detected too. It was then intended to establish a hospital of this kind to address these illnesses in Kalamboli.

The hospital is going to open with 52 beds, with the possibility of adding 24 more down the road. For the establishment expenditures, INR 15 crore has been allocated by the engineering department. There will be six ICU beds and 52 beds with oxygen.

Patients with contagious diseases such as malaria, swine flu, lepto, dengue, jaundice, and tuberculosis will be treated at the facility. Doctors will be stationed at the hospital around the clock. In addition to the resident physicians assigned to the hospital, there will be nine MBBS physicians working in shifts and three full-time MD physicians. Surgeons will be hired by the hospital as well.

Ganesh Deshmukh, Municipal Commissioner, stated that the COVID-19 pandemic has been an enormous learning experience. Many people suffer from infectious diseases, especially in locations with high population densities. Unfortunately, the cost of care at private hospitals is beyond the means of these people.

Deshmukh said that they have recently held a review meeting for the project with the officials working on it. In the meeting, the civic body asked them to speed up the process. Deshmukh asserted that they are confident of setting up the hospital by December 2024.

He said that they will soon be hiring officials for treating TB, malaria, and mother and child care management. Once the hospital is ready, residents will not have to travel to Mumbai and will receive high-quality treatment at a reasonable price in the city itself, Deshmukh said.

Apart from locals, people from other adjourning areas too will be relieved, as they will be getting the required healthcare a little closer. With this civic hospital, the contagious diseases of the districts of Thane and Raigad, including Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Uran, Khopoli, Khalapur, Alibaug, Roha, and Mangaon, will now be treated. This is a wise choice because impoverished patients will benefit greatly from the PMC hospital for infectious diseases.
