Mumbai: Number of Sealed Buildings and Containment Zones Witnessing a Sharp Drop Since December

As per data provided by civic officials, the number of sealed buildings in Mumbai has dropped from 5,000 to 2,000 since December 2020. Meanwhile, the number of containment zones have fallen from 434 to 221 in the same period. Officials said that around 8,000 active COVID-19 patients or their family members currently reside in these containment zones.

This comes as some wards that were deemed virus hotspots have seen a significant drop in the number of cases over the last month or so. Understandably, officials believe these are promising signs while adding that the reduction in cases has helped them open sealed buildings and containment areas within slum pockets of the city as well as chawls and other congested buildings.

Data shows that the B Ward (Dongri) currently has only two sealed buildings and 59 active cases which is the lowest among all the 24 administrative wards in Mumbai. Moreover, 22 of the 24 wards have less than 500 active COVID-19 cases at present.

This means that there are only two wards within the BMC’s periphery that have more than 500 cases. These wards are R Central (Borivali) which has 577 cases and K-West which has 528 cases as of now.

The R Central ward was reporting the maximum number of cases in Mumbai during the peak of the pandemic with a total of 21,230 cases seen so far. Until recently, this ward had the highest number of sealed buildings and was deemed a virus hotspot.

However, it has seen a turnaround over the last two months as civic officials managed to control the spread of the deadly virus. R Central ward currently has 273 sealed buildings along with six containment zones.

The E ward (Byculla-Nagpada) was also a hotspot at one point and had seen the transfer of the local ward officer at the height of the pandemic in April. Officials said that cases in this ward have come down significantly over the past few months. The E ward currently has 265 active COVID-19 patients within 63 containment zones and 52 sealed buildings.

Though the reduction in cases does come across as welcome news, civic officials acknowledged that some wards may not be reporting their figures accurately. Officials further said that they are taking mask-wearing and social distancing seriously and initiating strict action against those not adhering to these norms.
