On Sunday, June 20, experts confirmed that the count of samples that have tested positive for the emerging Delta-plus variant has reached nearly 20 in the country. Moreover, Maharashtra accounts for at least eight of these cases, most of which are from Ratnagiri.

Meanwhile, several samples have been sent for testing at Navi Mumbai, Palghar, and other areas. However, the results of the same are pending as of now. Moreover, an investigation is underway with regards to how dangerous this new variant is. Currently, transmissibility or severity of Delta-plus is being studied by INSACOG (Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Consortia). The doctor contended that they would also be analyzing samples dating to previous months to see if they already existed in March or April.

Delta Plus, a new variant of the coronavirus mutation, B.1.617.2, which was first discovered in India, has evolved. This mutation was named Delta variant by the World Health Organization. However, now due to mutations in this variant too, a variant called Delta Plus has been created.

On the other hand, the coronavirus’ new variant, Delta Plus, could trigger the third wave of COVID-19 in Maharashtra. It could also spread at a faster rate, said an official. The task force members also warned that Maharashtra could enter the third wave before coming out of the second if COVID-19 protocols aren’t followed.

The caution came at a preparedness meeting that CM Uddhav Thackeray led on Wednesday, June 16. Following this, an alarmed Thackeray told the state machinery to plug the gaps that surfaced previously. He expressed concern over the violation of COVID-19 appropriate behaviour and its dangers. Moreover, an increase in crowd capacity in public places will be an invitation for the third wave, he added.
