In a recent development, the National Medical Council (NMC) has announced a special stray vacancy round for admission to MBBS, BDS, and BSc Nursing programmes under the state quotas and All-India Quota (AIQ). The Supreme Court issued orders that led to this decision.

In Maharashtra particularly, the decision has created suspicion because of the controversy regarding the previous stray vacancy round. The round was held at the institution level and did not comply with NMC's criteria for online seat allocation. This led to 141 students being admitted, some of whom have decided to take legal action as they could lose their seats.

The special stray vacancy round is open to candidates who have not been awarded seats through prior admission rounds. Eligible candidates are required to deposit a refundable security amount of INR 50,000. However, those who reserve a spot but do not accept it will forfeit the deposit and will not be eligible to retake the NEET exam next year.

The special stray vacancy round will be conducted online. The states will conduct their rounds starting November 7, while the AIQ round will commence on Wednesday. In AIQ, there are 2,182 open seats in MBBS and about 300 in BDS.

Originally, admissions to undergraduate medical courses were to be concluded by September 30. However, many seats remained vacant. The central ministry of health and family welfare obtained permission from the Supreme Court (SC) to hold a special stray vacancy round for open MBBS, BSc Nursing, and BDS seats under the AIQ and state quota.

The Maharashtra CET department also announced a stray vacancy round for physiotherapy (BPTH) and ayurveda (BAMS) courses. It has approved an additional 160 BAMS seats and 150 BPTH seats. Sangli has fifty BPTH seats, while Chandrapur College has one hundred seats. There are 60 approved seats in private colleges in Yavatmal and 100 in Ahmednagar for BAMS.
