Amid a surge in the Delta variant cases, the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday, July 15, warned the world about the 'early stages' of COVID-19 third wave.

WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has alerted all countries, saying that we have reached the first stage of the third wave of the coronavirus.

This announcement comes a day after the WHO on Wednesday, July 14, said that Delta variant's spread, along with increased social mobility and the inconsistent use of proven public health measures, is driving an increase in both case numbers and deaths.

Experts believe that the third wave is inevitable considering the nature of the first two waves in India. The kind of indifference that is seen among the citizens after the second wave has subsided is worrisome.

Meanwhile, Tedros said that the virus is continuing to evolve, resulting in more transmissible variants. At the same time, it is becoming more contagious.

The Delta variant has now reached more than 111 countries. It could soon spread around the world. Alpha variants are detected in 178 countries. Beta and gamma variants are found in 123 and 75 countries, respectively.

According to Tanvi Gupta Jain, chief economist at UBS Securities India, India is at high risk of a third wave for three main reasons. Jain said the rules are being relaxed in most states. Financial transactions are being opened up and the pace of vaccination has slowed. This has increased the risk of a third wave.

Moreover, physicists at the University of Hyderabad have claimed that the third wave started on July 4. The death toll has risen in the past few days. Experts say this is due to an increase in the number of new patients compared to the number of patients recovering.
