The relatively old proposal for the establishment of transport and commercial hubs at Dahisar and Mankhurd octroi nakas is currently underway as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) begins the process of hiring project management consultants.

Civic officials said that the consultants will assist BMC in finalising a detailed plan for the construction and maintenance of the commercial hubs while also assisting with appointing contractors for the work.

The land portions at octroi checkpoints have been lying vacant since octroi was abolished in 2017 following the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). A year later in 2018, then Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta had proposed turning these vacant checkpoints into commercial and transport hubs.

The Mankhurd checkpoint has a total area of 29,774 square metres whereas the checkpoint at Dahisar has 24,628 square metres of area. The civic body is expecting to convert these checkpoints as part of a pilot project while a final call on other spots will be taken at a later stage.

Separately, there are two octroi checkpoints at Mulund, and one each at Airoli, Dahisar, and Vashi respectively spanning more than 44 acres.

“We have invited requests for proposals to appoint two project management consultants for preparing detailed plans and finalising contractors,” an official from the municipal architect department quoted by the Indian Express said.

“The transport hub will have a bus terminal where all intercity buses will terminate. There will be a food plaza, commercial offices, and shopping areas too. These transport hubs will also have connectivity with Metro or BEST buses, so that long-distance commuters can travel with ease,” he added.
