In a significant development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday, November 8, has revealed about its progress of INR 12,000 crores Mumbai coastal road project, which is the brainchild of former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Releasing an official statement, BMC shared that 65 per cent of the work has been completed on the south-bound coastal road. The entire project divided into three packages.

The work of the right tunnel is completed. Whereas, with 78 per cent of the work completed, the left tunnel is on the path of completion.

The total length of coastal road is 10.58 km. It includes 2 km long tunnel on both sides (twin tunnel). Once functional, this road will reduce the travel time by 70 per cent and fuel consumption by 34 per cent, it further added.

Moreover, around 62.24 per cent of the 3.82 km stretch from Priyadarshini Park to Baroda Palace in Package 1 has been completed.

It is pertinent to note that in July this year, i.e four months ago, the civic body proclaimed that 58 per cent of the work was finished.

The BMC started work on the mega project in 2018 and it is anticipated that it will be completed by November 2023. The civic authority claims that it has planned to reclaim 111 hectares of land for the MCRP. From this, 97 per cent which is 107 hectares have been reclaimed already.
