BMC’s Mumbai Parking Authority Gets Standing Committee Approval

The recently instituted Mumbai Parking Authority (MPA) of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has obtained the approval of the standing committee, paving the way for its implementation. The standing committee was chaired by Yashwant Jadhav. 

The MPA will be chaired by Additional Municipal Commissioner P Velrasu and will look to begin works across three BMC wards as a pilot project.

Officials said that when the plan is fully implemented, citizens can book parking spaces via online portals including mobile phones, adding that new parking prices will be in place as well. 

“Mumbai is facing a parking problem and in order to solve this problem it is important to take necessary measures to provide affordable and safe parking spaces,” an official release said.

The release added that former IAS officer Ramanath Jha will work as an advisor for this project and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences will accommodate the service of experts in the field. 

Experts have been tapped to carry out nine tasks which include preparing a detailed plan for parking management across all 24 civic wards, ironing out legal issues, drafting a parking policy, and closely studying the appropriate parking rates, etc.
