The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the setting up of two new eco-friendly furnaces at the Sion crematorium. The civic body said that these furnaces will take lesser time, fuel, and generate reduced smoke in comparison to standard furnaces at crematoriums.
The new installations will be established at a cost of ₹98.88 lakh as per the BMC. A press release issued by the civic body said that these new furnaces were commissioned by BMC’s public health department as well as the mechanical and electrical department.
The BMC handles a total of 46 cremation sites in Mumbai that include electric, conventional and gas-based furnaces.
It is said that these new eco-friendly furnaces require only 100 to 125 kilograms of wood as compared to 350 to 400 kgs of wood on standard cremation furnaces. This will reportedly take less than two hours as compared to four-plus hours for a regular cremation.

The civic body said that a body is placed in a special trolley accompanied by layers of wood on the top and bottom respectively. The trolley is then pushed into the enclosure while the door is shut, resulting in increased furnace temperature. The BMC said that the temperature can reach up to 950 degrees Celsius within the furnace.
Elaborating on the smoke generation, the BMC said that the smoke passes through a water scrubber which reduces the amount of carbon dioxide and other harmful particles released into the air. The smoke is then released via 90 to 100 foot high chimneys, the civic body added. It is said that these furnaces have been designed to function with minimal maintenance work.
