The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is looking into the issue of uneven distribution of water in slums and hilly areas by conducting a survey. With this in mind, the civic body has begun a total station survey at Govandi’s Chita camp.

It is said that the survey will cost ₹1.35 crores and will help improve the planning of future pipelines as well as water pressure. Several residents of slums and hilly regions have complained of low water pressure, uneven supply, etc.

This can be due to a variety of reasons including the slopes on the hill, and the fact that network lines are short in some areas. The survey will be reportedly conducted by the BMC’s Hydraulics Department.

“Based on the survey, the hydraulic department will plan a layout of pipelines and valves to improve water flow on slopes and narrow lanes. It will also help in deciding where and how many joints are needed,” a BMC engineer was quoted as saying.

Shivshankar Agarwal, Deputy Engineer (Construction) at the Hydraulic Department said, “As part of the survey, design of the area as per lanes, the width of lanes, slopes, angle of slopes will be noted. And then the planning department of hydraulic engineering will make a design of water lines.”

While some of these aspects are taken into account when laying the pipeline, this survey will help officials find solutions for regions with a challenging geographical location by sending water through tankers.

Authorities said that the survey would be conducted at Sectors C, D, E, J, K, H, Custom Colony road, Payli Pada, Datta Nagar MGR to Essel Studio at Chita Camp. The survey will span 50-hectares and also take into account the number of people as well as the huts in the region. The current completion deadline for the survey is three months.

After the completion of the survey, the civic body will appoint a contractor to lay the pipelines. Officials said that a survey of the same nature would be conducted at the slum in Mankhurd and Ghatkopar’s hilly regions.
