Civic authorities are planning to build a viewing deck at Dadar Chowpatty that would overlook the Bandra-Worli Sea Link as well as the ocean. This would provide a suitable atmosphere for the locals to visit the place and catch a glimpse of one of the city’s most iconic monuments from a dedicated viewing deck. This proposed project will replace an existing stormwater drain in the vicinity.

Local corporator Vishakha Raut (Shiv Sena) said - “The stormwater drain was built for the discharge of rainwater from mills in the area. But now with the mills no longer functional, the stormwater drain too has become redundant. We were, therefore, keen on setting up the viewing deck which can become a tourist site by itself.”

This viewing deck will be built around Chaityabhoomi and is also said to have special access for senior citizens and the differently-abled by using ramps. Further, the entire viewing dock will reportedly be lit up during the night.

Assistant Civic Commissioner Kiran Dighavkar clarified that Coastal Regulation Zone - 1 or CRZ regulations will apply to this project. “We’ve sought approval of the authorities. There are no plans to build anything. The existing area will have a jetty over it,” Dighavkar added.

It is said that the State Tourism Minister, Aaditya Thackeray is in favour of this move. Mumbai’s current administration has greenlit multiple citizen-friendly initiatives over the past few months.

But one of the State Government’s crowning achievements - stopping the construction of the Metro car shed at Aarey - may be at risk of being hindered as experts believe there are no alternative locations for the shed. Thackeray was recently said to be seeking expert help on the Aarey topic while considering alternative locations for the car shed.
