A detailed development plan for the reconstruction of 12 bridges has been completed by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for better infrastructure.
Shiv Sena-led BMC is looking to start the work ahead of BMC polls which will take place in February.
Most of the bridges were built during the British time and are now shackled. The decision to reconstruct them is made because they are vital for east-west connectivity passing over railway tracks.
BMC will be financing the reconstruction work, and the execution will be done by Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (MRIDCL).
Addressing the media, Yashwant Jadhav, the standing committee chairman, said that the work is expected to be completed by 2025. He further said that since there is an encroachment problem in the city, they are going for "cable-stayed bridges."
Reay Road bridge, Tilak bridge at Dadar, Ghatkopar bridge, Matunga bridge, Chinchapokali bridge, and Mahalaxmi bridge are the bridges included for reconstruction work.
The approach road work for the Hancock bridge between Sandhurst Road and Byculla railway station is still incomplete. However, the bridge is important for east-west connectivity.
Earlier this month, BMC undertook the process of re-auditing the bridges across the city.
