The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) is set to enter a crucial phase, with construction of rehabilitation buildings scheduled to begin in Sector 6 on railway land in Matunga. This marks a significant step in the long-awaited transformation of Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest informal settlements.

Civic authorities have urged residents in the identified areas to vacate their homes before the onset of the monsoon to avoid delays in execution. The Sector 6 land parcel has been prioritised as an initial site for rehabilitation, as it is considered relatively less complex compared to other parts of Dharavi.

In the first phase of the project, thousands of rehabilitation housing units are expected to be constructed to accommodate eligible residents. The redevelopment aims to provide improved living conditions through planned housing and better infrastructure, while ensuring that residents are rehabilitated within the Dharavi area.

To ease the transition, authorities have proposed multiple support measures for affected families, including transit accommodation or rent-based housing, financial assistance with annual rent escalation, and a one-time shifting allowance. These provisions are intended to ensure a smoother relocation process during the construction period.

Officials believe that initiating work in Sector 6 will help accelerate the overall redevelopment plan by enabling parallel construction activities in other sectors.

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is part of a large-scale urban renewal initiative aimed at transforming the area into a modern township with upgraded civic amenities and infrastructure, while addressing long-standing housing challenges.
