Energy Minister Nitin Raut Says New Thermal Projects Have Been Scrapped Due to Cost Concerns
SHARES

In a shift of policy, Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut has said that the government has decided not to establish proposed thermal power stations and shift focus onto the increasing of renewable energy sources. “The government will promote solar energy and ensure 25 per cent energy procured is from renewable sources,” Raut said.

It is said that the decision to move away from thermal power plants comes after considering the cost factor while there were also some concerns about the increase in pollution at some locations.

This will allow the government to provide a single-window clearance path for renewable and clean energy projects across Maharashtra. Consequently, this will fast-track all such projects to enhance the generation of energy from renewable sources.

State agencies have implemented renewable energy plans across several sectors, including railways. Not too long ago, Central Railway announced the setting up of solar energy projects across Lonavala and Khandala railway stations

Meanwhile, activist groups have asked the authorities to consider the implementation of solar panels on BEST buses which are considered to be the city’s lifeline. Unfortunately, there has been no progress made on this front by the authorities.

BEST has been under a financial crunch since 2019 as its revenues dipped significantly. The coronavirus pandemic has taken a further toll on the agency’s revenues, so it may be a while yet before the city’s buses run on renewable energy.
