Leader of the opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis has criticized the committee that has been set up by the State to recommend an alternative site for the contentious Metro car shed.

In a letter sent to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Fadnavis alleged that bureaucrats are misleading him, adding that Aarey is the best site for the car shed.

He further said, “A perception is being sought to be created that the Metro Line 3 car shed has been designed for passenger growth upto [sic] 2031. This is not true, it has been designed considering passenger growth till 2053.”

Taking this into consideration, Fadnavis said that an additional 1.4 hectares will be required by the year 2053 and 160 trees will need to be cut. However, shifting the car shed eight kilometres away will increase the felling of trees by up to three times, he added.

“The decision to shift the car shed will not only delay the metro project but will put a huge financial burden on the state,” the letter read.
