The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has faced some hurdles since its inception. More recently, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) asked landowners in the vicinity of the proposed airport to help expedite its development.

Now we’re getting our first glimpse of what the Navi Mumbai International Airport could look like thanks to a first-look/concept video posted by GVK Group which is developing the airport as a partner. CIDCO has been responsible for the overall development of the airport along with the Centre and the Maharashtra Government.

The video shows some of the aspects of the NMIA airport, including a prominent lotus flower pattern coupled with various cultural elements. The airport has been designed by the internationally acclaimed architectural firm, Zaha Hadid Architects.

When fully completed, the airport will cater to nearly 90 million passengers per year according to officials. As for the planning of the airport, it will feature two entrances on both the East and West sides.

Construction of the airport will be carried out in four phases. It will feature two runways with the ability to operate simultaneously coupled with a high-speed expressway, suburban metro rail, and other amenities.

The NMIA is being constructed at a cost of ₹16,256 crores. Although Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had earlier mentioned a completion deadline of May 2021 for this project, it was delayed further.
