A few parts of the railway station skywalk in Kalyan (West) is being demolished by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC). The work was initiated after the staircase structure was declared unsafe in an audit by the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) in May 2019.

KDMC city engineer Sapna Koli said that they had begun demolishing the stairs as they were unsafe and told that they are taking all the precautionary measures while doing the work. They have asked the commuters to avoid that area where the work is going on.

This demolition will also help with Kalyan station's ongoing Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS) project. The SATIS project comes under the Smart Cities Mission.

An official from Smart Kalyan Dombivli Corporation Limited (SKDCL) said that they need to demolish some part of the skywalk to build SATIS at the station, and hence they are undertaking that work as well. In the coming days, the station area will be decongested.

Meanwhile, the residents of the Kalyan station have claimed that the demolition work is a waste of money as crores were spent earlier on the skywalk, and now after a few years, they are demolishing it.

Last week, the KDMC commissioner had asked the civic body to repair the roads before Diwali after receiving numerous complaints about the potholes.
