The Kalyan-Badlapur stretch, which will have two additional lines to separate outstation and suburban trains, has witnessed a significant milestone. On August 22, commuters had staged a protest calling for the expansion of train services beyond Kalyan.
As per reports, this week, a new road overbridge beneath which the two lines will run was completed. At a cost of INR 30 crore, the structure was built 10 days ahead of schedule. By December 2026, the entire route is anticipated to be completed.
The new bridge connects Forest Naka in the west to Katai-Badlapur Road in the east, serving the Ambernath-Badlapur MIDC area. Now, the present bridge that crossed two tracks will be destroyed. The project is situated between Kalyan and Badlapur stations on the third and fourth lines.
The third and fourth lines are a 14-kilometer suburban railway project that will separate long-distance and suburban trains, an official stated. The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is carrying out the project as part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3A at a cost of INR 1,510 crore. A new station in Chikhloli is also being built as part of the project; it will be situated 3.1 km from Badlapur and 4.34 km from Ambernath.
The newly developed, densely populated townships of Badlapur, Ambernath, and Ulhasnagar would benefit greatly from the corridor. There are currently two tracks that are utilised by freight, express and local trains, which limits the amount of suburban trains that may operate, reported Midday.
The project has secured all 9.77 hectares of private property needed for it. Additionally, the 2.59 hectares of government land needed have been purchased. On May 8, 2023, 0.25 hectares of forest land achieved stage I clearance, and by September 29, 2023, working permissions were secured. The formal approval, or Stage II clearance, application has been filed.
Two of the four road overbridges are now ready, and the road overbridges at MIDC and Level Crossing Gate 1A are finished as well. At level crossing gate 4/C, where the road's westward diversion is complete, work is still under progress. Additionally, work on level crossing 7 has begun. After the monsoon, other projects, including building the new Chikhloli station, will pick up steam.
Subhash Chand Gupta, chairman and managing director, MRVC, told midday that their dedication is on the prompt and effective completion of the third and fourth lines connecting Kalyan and Badlapur. The noteworthy advancements achieved, such as the fulfilment of important ROBs, the purchase of land, and the approval of crucial plans and constructions, demonstrate our commitment to improving suburban rail infrastructure.
He said that they are optimistic that we will complete by December 2026, when all parties have gotten on board and all necessary permits have been obtained. This will significantly help everyday travellers by reducing traffic and enhancing travel reliability.
