Larsen & Toubro (L&T) said that one of its subsidiaries won a huge contract for constructing a bridge in Mumbai. L&T, in an official statement, said that its transportation infrastructure business vertical won a contract for the construction of the Dahisar-Bhayander link road project in Mumbai.

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) sanctioned the Dahisar-Bhayander bridge construction project to L&T’s subsidiaries. The length of the bridge will be 4.5 kms. Once the bridge is ready, it will reduce the travel time from 1 hour to just 30 minutes.

The contract's exact amount was not disclosed by the corporation, but the estimated value of such projects ranges between INR 2,500 crore and INR 5,000 crore.

The sanction of this construction project witnessed several delays. The contractor selection procedure was nearing completion by mid-July. Last year, bids for this important infrastructure project were released, and the design-and-build contract was expected to cost approximately INR 3186 crore.

The authorities provided technical feedback from specialists on its inventive design for moving across mangrove regions, salt pans, and waterways to justify the many deadlines. The authorities had promised to release work orders for this connection road in August, but it took place in October. Three building companies were competing.

The bridge, a crucial link proposed to improve connectivity, will also give drivers an alternate route to avoid the heavy traffic jams at the Dahisar toll plaza, where northbound vehicles travel to Vasai, Virar, Palghar, and Gujarat via the Western Express Highway, which continues as the National Highway (NH-48). The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose municipal ground is located on Uttan Road in Bhayandar West, and the bridge starts (according to the design board) just outside of the Kandarpada metro station.

The BMC will have jurisdiction over almost 1.5 km of the proposed bridge's length, and the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) will have jurisdiction over the remaining area. It will be 45 metres wide and elevated. With assistance from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the BMC is carrying out the project.

Apart from this bridge construction project, last month L&T won a mega order associated with an underground road tunnel connecting Orange Gate, Eastern Freeway and Marine Drive Coastal Road. The order was worth over INR 7000 crore.

Last month, in an official statement, the company said that the scope of the project covers the design and construction of twin road tunnels utilising tunnel boring machines (TBMs), connecting these tunnels to the existing elevated Eastern Freeway at Orange Gate near its southern terminal through transition ramps and to Marine Drive. By 2028, the project is supposed to be completed.

For this two-plus-lane tunnel, popularly known as a "twin tunnel," the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) issued a request for proposals on December 31, 2022. As published by the FPJ on January 1 of this year, the project's anticipated cost at the time was given as Rs6,327 crore, and the completion date was given as mid-2027.
