A new report suggests that the State Government is considering mering the maintenance site or car shed for Metro Line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) with Line 6 (Vikhroli-Lokhandwala). This move is apparently being considered as a way to cut costs.

For this purpose, the State Government has assigned Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to come up with a feasibility study as well as a detailed project report. The DMRC has been given a deadline of three months to submit the report. The Line 6 car shed is expected to come up at Pahadi, Goregaon.

One of the major takeaways from this new study is that the contentious Aarey car shed site is now no longer in contention for the car shed, in line with the State Government’s stance on the matter.

The report goes on to state that merging the Metro Line 3 and Line 6 car sheds may also lead to increase in costs which will likely  trickle down to the consumers.

However, there are expected to be some savings on the project as well. An unnamed state government official said - “The savings will be on account of land cost and pooling of resources and manpower. But then one has to also factor in revenue loss due to delay in opening the line. Also, the cost will increase due to payments on interest that will have to be made to lenders.”

Experts in the field say that the State is looking to keep 89 out of the 129 hectares belonging to a no development zone or NDZ for this metro yard. However, officials haven’t confirmed this at the moment.

As for Mumbaikars, the merger of the two lines is expected to make connectivity with southern Mumbai significantly better by leveraging the Metro 3 line.
