On Wednesday, December 16, the Maharashtra government has decided to waive off the service charge of 56 Mumbai Board of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) colonies situated across Mumbai.

In a meeting held, the Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asked the housing department to provide relief to the owners of MHADA flats living in 56 MHADA colonies, who have not paid service charges against the formation of co-operative societies since 20 years as they belong from the low-income group (LIG) and middle-income group (MIG).

According to reports, the pending amount accumulated to a huge amount following the addition of fine and interest charged on it. However, the flats owners had requested the state government to waive the fine and interest.

This decision was taken in a meeting held at the Chief Minister's residence on Wednesday, December 16. The meeting was attended by Transport Minister Adv. Anil Parab, Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad, former Minister of State Ravindra Vaikar, MLA Mangesh Kundalkar, Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar, Chief Adviser to the Chief Minister Ajoy Mehta, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Ashish Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary for Urban Development Nitin Karir, Chief Minister's Principal.

Besides, Secretary Vikas Kharge, Principal Secretary Housing Srinivasan, MHADA Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Anil Diggikar, Mumbai City Collector Rajiv Nivatkar, Mumbai Suburban Collector Milind Borikar and other officials were also present.

In the meeting, it was also discussed about the housing of the workers in the Swadeshi Mill Compound in Mumbai as well as the police station in Nehru Nagar Mhada colony.

The CM also directed all the district collectors to stop conversion of Class II plots to freehold till further notice. The decision was taken because a few people were taking its benefit and the premium charged by the government is low.

He also urged the committee to prepare Abhay Yojana and submit it as soon as possible, which is constituted to provide relief in arrears of service charges of the land provided for residential purposes.
