In order to reduce the traffic congestion and pollution near Ellora Caves, a world heritage site in Aurangabad district, the Eknath Shinde led Maharashtra government sanctioned the construction of a bypass road.

This decision was taken by a high-level committee meeting under the chairmanship of the chief secretary, which was held on Monday, January 9. Divisional Commissioner Sunil Kendrekar and Collector Astik Kumar Pandey, among other officials were also present.

Announcing the decision after the meeting, officials stated that a 1.7-km-long and 15-metre wide bypass will be constructed at the cost of INR 27.5 crores.

The old National Highway-52 passes close to the Ellora Caves complex. The road connects north and south India, and hence, it sees heavy traffic and pollution that affects the environment around the caves.

According to officials, the bypass will begin near cave no. 1 of Ellora Caves and will end beyond Ghrishneshwar temple. Shopkeepers in the vicinity will be shifted to the MTDC tourist centre area, they said.

Besides, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) announced that the popular tourist destination Ajanta caves in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad will soon have QR codes at the entry points to impart information about the paintings to the visitors. The ASI is planning to make the system available before the G20-related event, the official said.
