Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), which provides affordable housing to the citizens, has finally received the status of the planning authority. After the state government accepted MHADA’s demand, the Urban Development Department on Wednesday issued an ordinance regarding the same.
MHADA has set up affordable housing across Mumbai and now it will also be responsible to work for ‘Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana’. Along with this, MHADA has redeveloped 56 colonies. On the other hand, the redevelopment of 16 thousand buildings still remains.
MHADA faces numerous problems while implementing the housing and redevelopment projects because the MHADA’s projects come under the development control regulatory authority. Thus, it needs to get permission from the Municipal Corporation for their projects. Not only this, MHADA also needs to seek permission for the machinery.

To take permission from various government agencies, for the projects, takes a long time and is often delayed by the concerned authorities which result in the delayed implementation of MHADA’s projects. Therefore, MHADA has demanded the status of Planning Authority.
The Maharashtra government has accepted MHADA’s demand and has given Planning Authority status to MHADA. The development authority will have to seek permission from any government agencies to implement its housing projects. This decision would help to complete the projects on time.
