A large-scale elevated road project has been placed into action by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) with the objective of addressing persistent traffic bottlenecks across Thane. The initiative has been designed as an 8.24-kilometre structure stretching from Anand Nagar on the Eastern Express Highway to Saket in Thane West. The proposal has been introduced to provide a continuous, signal-free passage over some of the city’s most heavily congested points.

For several years, major intersections such as Teen Hath Naka, Nitin Junction, Cadbury Junction, and the Golden Dyes Junction at Majiwada have been burdened with overwhelming traffic. Despite the existence of multiple six-lane flyovers, frequent interruptions have continued due to service lanes and slip roads merging into the main highway. This recurring pattern of merging traffic has been viewed as a key contributor to the prolonged delays experienced by commuters.

To counter these issues, the new elevated route has been conceptualised as a structure that would bypass all the problematic junctions. The corridor has been planned to overarch the busy stretches, allowing uninterrupted movement across Thane’s densest traffic pockets. Its role has been further emphasised in light of the Majiwada junction’s strategic connection to the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Highway. With this link being used by commuters heading towards Gujarat from Mumbai and Nashik, a significant reduction in travel time is anticipated once the corridor becomes operational.

The alignment of the elevated road has been outlined to begin at Anand Nagar, emerging near the landing point of the Cheda Nagar–Anand Nagar corridor. From there, it has been set to move over the series of congested junctions before descending at Saket in Thane West. A six-lane configuration, offering three lanes on each side for two-way movement, has been incorporated into the design.

The estimated project cost has been placed at ₹1,847.72 crore. As per the latest updates shared by officials, construction activity has been advancing with work underway on foundational elements, including piles, pile caps, and piers. Preliminary surveys and geotechnical assessments have already been completed, and overall physical progress has been recorded at 5.25%. A total duration of 48 months has been assigned for the project, with 36 months reserved specifically for construction work on the ground. Based on the current schedule, the elevated roadway has been targeted for completion by 2028, after which significant improvement in traffic movement across Thane is expected.
