The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDL) has issued a statement saying that 70% of the electricity in Raigad and Ratnagiri has been restored. These regions were severely damaged after Cyclone Nisarga made landfall across the state.

It is said that a total of 6.35 lakh users from Pen, Roha, Alibaug, Pali, Tal, Murud, Mangaon, Mahad, Goregaon, Srivardhan, Mhasla, and Poladpur were the worst impacted. However, the MSEDL chief spokesperson Anil Kamble clarified that over 3.62 lakh customers have seen their electricity restored.

Additionally, a total of 32 electricity substations were damaged as a result of Cyclone Nisarga. However, 27 of these substations have reportedly been fixed as of now. Data provided by the authorities suggest that more than 11,000 electric poles were damaged or hit due to the cyclone. It is said that 6,773 transformers were also impacted, and the authorities have since repaired 3,096 of them.

While it’s clear that a lot remains to be done to make sure normalcy is restored, the authorities have been working overtime to ensure power is back for thousands of civilians who are still without electricity at their homes. Small industries and rural workshops are also expected to be hit badly by the lack of power supply in their regions.

Cyclone Nisarga barely made it to Mumbai, although it has wreaked havoc on regions like Ratnagiri, Palghar, Sindhudurg, and Raigad damaging public and private property. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is believed to have asked the authorities to expedite works on coastal districts including the construction of shelters for emergency evacuation.
